Another Motorcycle Loop in Nova Scotia

Today's excursion took the BMW onto highway 215 and then 236. The route can be started in Windsor, Nova Scotia (Tim Horton's in my case). Head down the 101 highway to the Rawdon Hills turnoff. Follow the Glooscap Trail signs - HWY 215. Road conditions were excellent on the 215 all the way to Noel. Not so good on the 236 for cruisers, although the GSA didn't kick up any fuss through the potholes.

The 215 is an excellent motorcycle road with lots of hills and turns with little traffic on it midday. There are lots of spots to stop at to view Blomidon from a different perspective. The temperature drops off a few degrees when you are by the water which was an issue today. The temperature by the water was 9 C and went to 14 C inland. It rose up to 17 C once I found my way back to the Annapolis Valley mid afternoon.

Just in case you are the only one in the world that isn't aware of the tide issue.

Just off of highway 236 you will see a sign for Stanley Airport - Off the road about 1 km, it is now operated as a civilian small aircraft port. Stanley airport began operation as RCAF Station Stanley in March 1941, and operated as such until approximately 1944. After World War II ended, RCAF Station Stanley was decommissioned. This was a training base.

Ring Necked Pheasant in Nova Scotia

Ring Necked Pheasant strolling through our yard today claiming his territory and screeching for attention from the ladies. We expect to see the female pheasants and their young ones soon. Behind our house is a minor pine tree forest where they love to establish their home.

Click this picture to see the pheasant in full size on your computer screen. They are a beautiful bird to see.

Victoria Beach and Digby Nova Scotia

Victoria Beach, Nova Scotia, is a tiny village across the water from Digby which is the home of the Scallop Fleet.

Here you will see some of the fishing boats tied up and waiting for the next working day. The tide was coming in at this moment and would soon lift the boats up off the mud.

Port Wade is on the main road leading to Victoria Beach. The road ends at Victoria Beach. Notice the fog lifting as the sun does it's work.Today was a beautiful April day with temperatures in the low 20's. The day started off around 8 Celsius.

Digby Wharf across the water from the Victoria Beach dock. The ferry terminal is visible across the water. This ferry takes travelers and commercial vehicles from Nova Scotia to St. John New Brunswick.

Moose River - a great ride on a warm day with lots of twisty roads for interesting motorcycle travelling. This area is near Digby and Cornwallis which is a former military training center.

Gleaner Combine

I found this old Gleaner combine on a side road near Aylesford, Nova Scotia. From Wiki : The Gleaner Manufacturing Company was the name of a company which made the first self-propelled combine harvesters. They are best known for their production while part of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company. Gleaning itself is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. There are a few around the valley rusting away in the fields. Click the picture to view a full size version of the combine.
